Packing and Storing Tips

  • Box everything that you can - breakable items should be wrapped in bubble pack or tissue paper.
  • Clearly label all boxes on all sides so you can identify the contents and keep an inventory.
  • Do not fill large boxes with heavy items such as books as they will quickly become too heavy to carry and may break.
  • Try to fill boxes to the top with light weight material such as bubble wrap or tissue paper. Boxes that are only half filled will tend to collapse if anything is placed on them.
  • Avoid packing items in sealed plastic bags because humidity can cause mildew.
  • Books should be stored flat to avoid damaging their spine.
  • Mirrors and pictures need extra protection. Stack them on their ends and securely wrap them for protection.
  • Before storage, separate lamp bases and lamp shades and securely wrap them for protection.
  • Under no circumstances should you keep anything flammable or combustible in your storage unit which means no gasoline, oil, cleaning fluids, or paint thinner. Drain tanks if you are storing items such as lawn mowers.
